Compiled for you on Thursday March 11, 2010.
How Low [Explicit] by Ludacris
On 2010-02-23, this reviewer said: “”How Low” is one of the ludicrous rap songs around. It gets 2 stars instead of 1 because it has a catchy rhythm… beyond that,Ludacris lives up to his name. Even Flo Rida’s “Low” (with a somewhat uncredited Ke$ha,before she hit it big with Tik Tok) is better. Why? Because of the high-pitched Chipmunk-style rapping that sounds like it’s straight from Alvin And The Chipmunks: The Squeakquel (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) If it’s supposed to be sexy, why does Ludacris throw in the falsetto-voiced Alvin?
“How Low” is more of a WTF? rap “song.” It’s better than Justin Bieber’s My World, but that’s not saying much. Believe me.” This person named their review Chipmunks get down, get freaky and they gave How Low [Explicit] a 2 star rating.
Based on all reviews, How Low [Explicit], one of the Top Ten Rap Songs, has achieved an average rating of 2.0 STARS!

BedRock [Explicit] by Young Money
On 2010-03-03, this reviewer said: “I thought this CD would be a lot better. With all of the talent that is on this label I felt that there should have been more songs and and that more of the artist on the label would have been featured on the CD. Overall some of the songs are ok and than yoau have a few that are really good. I didn’t like that Lil’ Wayne did the hook for just about every song. He should have really sat back and let only his artist be on this CD. There are not a lot of songs with Drake which I felt was a great idea, because he is already established. Overall I would not waste my money on this CD, because there are only about four or five songs that I would download. ” This person named their review Young Money and they gave BedRock [Explicit] a 3 star rating.
Based on all reviews, BedRock [Explicit], one of the Top Ten Rap Songs, has achieved an average rating of 3.0 STARS!

Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Explicit) by Jay-Z
In a review on 2010-01-19 entitled Original and Great Lyrics, “Borrowed” Music, nagaxen wrote, “While I have been a fan of both Jay-Z and Alicia Keys since their respective initial albums and I honestly loved this song the first time I heard it, I was somewhat annoyed by the fact that the overall theme of the song (message, rhythm, harmony, and to some extent even the melody) seems to have been borrowed from another song that came out nearly 2 years before this did:
Malbec - The Visit
If you listen to Malbec’s song and then listen to Jay-Z’s song, you can notice a few similarities:
* The initial beat is the exact same.
* The repetitions of “New York” in both choruses have the same rhythm (Jay-Z’s is slowed down by about half iirc but the ratio is nearly 100% identical) and the actual melody is astonishingly similar.
* Both are shout outs to New York.
Both songs have a great amount of musical energy and the harmonies/melodies leave one with a sense of inspiration but because Jay-Z’s came out 2 years later, it feels as though his and Alicia Keys’ song is nothing more than a simple hip-hop version with some musical rearrangement and new lyrics of an already good song.
If I had never known about the Malbec song, I would have given this 5 stars without a doubt… However, sadly, I’m a little disappointed in two of my favorite artists (especially Alicia Keys) for all of these similarities without even a tip of the hat to Malbec.
I know it’s difficult to come up with any music that’s actually “original” these days but it doesn’t even seem like they were trying this time and these songs are far too similar for this to be a coincidence. It pains me to give this song only 2 stars but I feel it’s the best it deserves given the above issues.” This listener gave Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Explicit) a 2 star rating.
In a review on 2009-12-03 entitled Surprise, surprise., stamps110 wrote, “As a lover of rock, blues, jazz, classical and more, I would never listen to rap let alone buy a song.
When I first heard “Empire State of Mind” with Alicia Keys on the awards show I was deeply moved by the words about New York and Ms. Keys whole hearted, gigantic contribution with her voice to lift Jay Zs text to heights I never imagined existed. “Concrete jungle that’s where dreams are made of, there’s nothing you can do now you’re in New York. These streets will make you feel brand new, these lights will inspire you. Let’s hear it for New York” YES. Congratulations to you both from another born and raised Bronxite.” This listener gave Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Explicit) a 5 star rating.
In a review on 2009-11-12 entitled Even more PROUD to be a ‘New Yorker’, jackb10 wrote, “I am NOT a big fan of ‘rap’, but this one, by Jay-Z caught my ear the first time I heard it. The beat and the chorus gets you going and being a Native New Yorker, I relate to all the ’shout-out’s’. Playing this jam, makes me feel GOOD and PROUD! Another masterpiece, from the Master….Jay-Z!” This listener gave Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Explicit) a 5 star rating.
In a review on 2009-11-08 entitled Nice, mr_pootywinkle wrote, “Very good song. I wouldn’t mind the hook being turned into its own song, very catchy and Jay-Z is consistently good on this track.” This listener gave Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Explicit) a 5 star rating.

Great wordplay, wit, balance between the vocalists. You could dance to it or just listen. I hope this is the start of a superstar career for both B.O.B. and singer Bruno Mars. Where’s the video?” This listener gave Nothin’ On You [Feat. Bruno Mars] (Album Version) a 5 star rating.

On To The Next One [Jay-Z + Swizz Beatz] (Explicit) by Jay-Z
In a review on 2010-02-28 entitled Move On, kernermichael wrote, “Jay-Z has mostly used collaborations for his single from his Blueprint: Volume 3 record in tune. While some of his collaborations have been good ones like Empire State Of Mind with Alicia Keys, others haven’t shown their strength well like Run This Town with Rihanna & Kanye West. That honestly though hasn’t shown here on this single On To The Next One with Swizz Beatz. I really didn’t find this song to honestly have the stamina that there honestly could’ve shown on the album. I really wasn’t very impressed with the song at all. I think that Jay-Z should try to bring in a bit more might to his music, and the next single should honestly try to show that, because it just wasn’t completely here at all. Move on to the next one.
Song: D ” This listener gave On To The Next One [Jay-Z + Swizz Beatz] (Explicit) a 2 star rating.

Forever [Explicit] by Drake
On 2010-01-25, this reviewer said: “Forever by Drake ft. Kanye, Lil Wayne, and Eminem, is one of hip-hop/rap’s most catchy, and brilliant songs ever produced. Eminem’s part is by far the best, following by Drake, then Kanye, then Lil Wayne. This song is on repeat on my playlist and will be for a long time.
Also, check on Travis Barker’s remix of this song, it’s insane. (youtube)” This person named their review One of the best, if not the best, rap song out there. and they gave Forever [Explicit] a 5 star rating.

Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) by Jay-Z
On 2009-10-09, this reviewer said: “Wow what an album. I wasn’t a fan in the past until I heard “On To The Next One”. Now I’m hooked and went on to purchase all of his albums. Everything is arranged well and the album is definitely a car banger. ” This person named their review Jay - Z at his finest point! and they gave Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) a 5 star rating.
On 2009-09-21, this reviewer said: “not a bad jam jigga and kanye spit some nice raps but rihanna need to stick to the ballads she wanna be sh killa now or is this her split personality where was this attitude at when chris brown wooped her azz.” This person named their review rihanna shut the hell up you ain’t no gangster and they gave Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) a 3 star rating.
In a review on 2009-09-03 entitled Running Away, kernermichael wrote, “When it has came down to it, when a collaboration has became a trio, the feeling doesn’t shine as brilliantly as you would hope for. That honestly is the case with Run This Town from Jay-Z, Rihanna and Kanye West. The latest single from Jay-Z’s upcoming album The Blueprint 3. The song is dark, but honestly I don’t feel the chemistry as much with Kanye West in the song, as much as we’ve heard the collaboration between Jay-Z & Rihanna. This also is her first single since the domestic violence spat with the controversial Chris Brown back in February. I give her some credit for stepping out again, but she needs to bring more into her songs to match the mood. Hopefully, for Jay-Z, when his album comes out, he can dominate the #1 spot again, and have a better arrangement of songs.
Song: D” This listener gave Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) a 2 star rating.
On 2009-08-25, this reviewer said: “Hot track from The Blueprint 3, Jay-Z’s forthcoming LP. Jay-Z, Rihanna, and Kanye killed on this single. Can’t wait to hear the rest of the album. ” This person named their review Hot Single and they gave Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) a 5 star rating.

I also love the fact Amazon doesn’t sell DRM music so I can move the song from my ipod to my work computer or wherever else…. Without any problems unlike Itunes their music is digitaly protected. This track is actually more expensive on itunes $1.99 over there…” This listener gave Run This Town [Jay-Z + Rihanna + Kanye West] (Explicit Album Version) a 5 star rating.

Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Amended) by Jay-Z
On 2010-02-13, this reviewer said: “Quite a few people (81%) chose to buy this song over the original. So along with the rest, I went ahead and tried it out. And it wasn’t worth it. The N word is edited, and the S word, but it’s hard to hear the second verse, where Jay-Z describes– his– selling– Africa– [every fourth word is edited out, is what I'm saying).
But what I really wanted edited was not cut. It's the bit about Mama at the bus stop, everybody [...], just like the bus route. If that was gone, I’d be happy. As it is, I’m not.” This person named their review You’re better off buying the original and they gave Empire State Of Mind [Jay-Z + Alicia Keys] (Amended) a 3 star rating.
