On August 31, this reviewer said: “Before I start let me just say this is my first Plasma TV purchase as I feared the Image Retention and Burn in problems of past plasma’s. I have bought a new LCD TV almost at a rate of one a year (my wife hates my passion for a high quality tv) trying to find a TV that made me happy. None of which has clinched my happiness until I received this TV!
First lets just say this 50″ tv is huge! I couldn’t believe the difference in my 42 inch to this 50 inch. The colors on this TV are very lifelike and rich in color even on standard definition programming. The THX mode is just outstanding although if you search over at avs forums for some settings that might appeal to you more.
I was a little afraid of buying a plasma because my living room has a 10 foot long by 6 foot high bay window and I have track bar lighting for night time viewing. However the anti reflective screen is amazing. I barely see any glare unless i really look and it doesn’t affect the beauty of the deep blacks and rich colors.
I use this TV mostly for sports, games via PS3 and Xbox 360, and watching blu-rays via PS3. First sports are just amazing, No more blur. It always drove me nuts the blur while watching anything fast on tv. I really noticed it while watching the Indy 500 this year on my 240 hz Vizio LCD set this year and thats when I first started looking for a new TV. So far with this TV I have watched an IRL race, a recorded NHL game in HD(go PENGUINS), Baseball, Nascar race, Preseason football and I have not noticed any blur at all and I have really been trying to find some to fault the TV some how.
PS3 and Xbox 360 games are like a whole new system on this monster TV. Its like upgrading from a regular playstation to a 360. The colors are richer, clearer. Gameplay is smooth and I don’t notice any delay. Dark scenes in games are much easier to navigate through and so much nicer to look at.
Blurays I was a little worried about since I have read that this TV doesn’t properly handle 1080p/24 playback. However I have not noticed any difference in blu ray playback and the quality is outstanding. Its like watching out a window when watching blu rays. The action is just right there in front of you and could not be any clearer.
Also the streaming of internet apps is great. Netflix just got released yesterday for those who have been waiting for it. Although I can stream netflix from my ps3 and xbox it is much easier for my wife to just have to push one button on the TV remote then trying to mess with my onkyo reciever and get the inputs right. You can also stream youtube videos, picassa, pandora music, Amazon VOD, Fox sports is coming soon and a couple of others I can’t think of off hand.
The sound quality on this TV actually isn’t too bad for a flat panel. It seems much richer and better than any of my three LCD’s I have owned although as mentioned I play most of my sound thorough and Onkyo 7.1 home theater. The remote for the TV is big and offers nice big buttons for those who have big fingers. It also has a back light on the remote which is a nice touch.
All in all I am very happy with this purchase through Amazon. I am also willing to answer any questions that you might have about this TV and will do my best to answer to the best of my knowledge. Amazon got my TV to me using CEVA shipping in 5 days. The picture quality was outstanding right out of the box, hooked up to digital cable. Very minimal tweaking of picture settings needed to deliver an outstanding image. After doing all the research on the latest and greatest out there (LED, and in particular, true full array LED backlighting) I looked at the image quality of this TV at a local store and could not justify the extra $400+ for it. While I don’t claim to be an expert, I find the contrast and blacks to be very good on this TV, and the overall image and color quality are excellent. The style of this TV is also nice and sleek, and I especially like the ease of pivoting the TV on its stand, which is a cool translucent cylinder. My regular old DVD player looks great playing on this TV, and the HD content on digital cable blew me away. I find the sound quality good, but it is not going to deliver the big cinema sound that many folks are coming to expect (just like most TVs these days). Amazon’s delivery on this was a little slow (with free shipping it was a full two weeks for delivery), but I was very happy with the delivery service. I got on Amazon and was even more impressed with the price it was available at.
I’m now extremely pleased with my purchase. What an upgrade from a 27″ 4:3 CRT television, even though I considered that CRT to be really good quality in the picture department. I’m using this TV in a room that gets a lot of daylight via a large patio door. Glare is not an issue, and so much better than with the old CRT.
Sound is pretty good through the built in speakers, although I spend most of the time watching with the sound run through a separate sound system.
The Internet “widgets” are just fluff to me, and I haven’t used them. My other equipment already support Netflix and Pandora, which are the two things I ever want to use via my home theater. But I really don’t feel like I paid extra for them being on the TV, as other TV’s without them, but with comparable reviews to this model, were not significantly different in price.
I like to fiddle with settings, and have to say one thing I wish was better is documentation about all the picture settings available on this TV. There are many settings if you care to dig into them, but the manual does not explain all of them very well. There are also some settings that aren’t always available (visible, but grayed out in the menu), but no explanation as to why is given in the manual. But there is a “Picture Wizard” tool built in to the TV, which got the picture pretty close to what I wanted, and I was able to get it the rest of the way on my own.
Overall, I don’t think one can go wrong with this television. Price was even better than other bargain stores we compared to before purchasing. I’ve used Samsung computer monitors for years with great results. This TV didn’t disappoint. Picture is bright and clear. Was very easy to set up. Only caveat is the speakers are in the back, so sound is directed against the wall. For best sound, would suggest a hoe theater or soundbar to go with this. Only downside of the whole experience was the delivery. It came via third-party shipper and they were not very flexible on time of delivery. Had to have a neighbor come and accept the box while driving home as they wanted to drop it earlier than they has stated and weren’t willing to come back an hour later so I could be there to accept shipment. If I’m not mistaken, if I base my next LCD TV purchase, the safest thing for me to do is to go with a Samsung. This just validates my thoughts that a Samsung might just be the best bang for your buck in LCD tvs. Thanks for making it easier to decide my purchase.
