Couples Retreat

Couples Retreat, directed by Peter Billingsley, featuring Vince Vaughn and Jason Bateman, maneuvers into #1 on our list and is consistently among the top movie downloads this week. People have many thoughts on this movie. You can view the trailer and provide your own feedback by clicking the link below.
On March 09, this reviewer said: “I expected to like this despite the bad critics reviews. I liked “The Break Up” even though a lot of people didn’t because they found it uncomfortable to watch Aniston and Vaughn fight, this was like that only not as funny (IMO of course). It started off ok but went nowhere. I guess this is what they mean by forgettable because I watched it a week ago and I can’t remember what I disliked so much about it, just a waste of time I guess. If there was half stars I’d give it 2.5 because there were some funny parts… I’m rambling again.” This person named their movie review review Forgettable I think. and they gave Couples Retreat a 2 star rating.

The Hurt Locker

The Hurt Locker, directed by Kathryn Bigelow, featuring Jeremy Renner and Anthony Mackie, finds itself at #2 on our list and has achieved a solid ranking in our list of top ten movie rentals. Does this show deserve its place on the list? Read these reviews and find out!
In a movie review on March 10 entitled The Hurt Locker…hurts!, richard9358 wrote, “This undeservedly overly hyped out-of-all-proportion movie is a vast disappointment. While successful in its depiction of the old adage that War is Hell, this movie really doesn’t show us anything new that we haven’t seen before in war movies equally well-done if not better done than this one. It is a well-enough made pic about the hell that is (or was) Iraq since the movie is set in 2004. But that is all it is. There are some well-done action sequences and there is a requisite amount of tension since we are primarily dealing with a bomb squad…but there is no script worth mentioning, no great acting worth waxing ecstatic about, no profoundities to ponder, no characters we ever truly come to like and care about. It is very akin in parts to “Full Metal Jacket” and “Black Hawk Down.” It owes alot to “Platoon” and “Apocalpyse Now.” (The movies just mentioned, by the way, are all far better than this one.) It’s main character is a descendant of Steve McQueen’s war-loving, isolated characters in “The War Lover” and “Hell is for Heroes.” Why it won Best Picture is not because it is a great movie, but because it was the PC thing to do to help boost morale amongst today’s military - and to break the male-dominated Best Director award by giving it to the Academy’s first-ever female director. And, as mentioned by many others on Amazon, there are several unrealistic sequences and a cliched death that I could see coming an hour before. Now, I have not seen “Avatar” and have no desire to see so - the blue aliens just look very odious and unrealistic to me and James Cameron writes awful scripts. (”Titanic” was a silly little love story riddled with lousy dialogue and a soap opera plot.) Having said that, maybe “Avatar” did get the shaft on Oscar night. If “The Hurt Locker” is what the Academy deems a “Best Picture” then, well, it is no wonder they forgot to include not just Farrah Fawcet in the sequence remembering those persons affiliated with the film industry who have passed over - but also Edward Woodward and Patrick McGoohan were ignored. Anyway, as to “The Hurt Locker”…it hurt knowing I wasted the money buying the DVD and not awaiting its arrival on cable.” This reviewer gave The Hurt Locker a 2 star rating.

The Informant!

The Informant!, directed by Steven Soderbergh, featuring Scott Bakula and Melanie Lynskey, holds spot #3 on our list of top online movie rentals today. Should it be in this spot? Some think so, others say no. Here is the latest review:
In a movie review on March 06 entitled Quirky retelling of Interesting Story, tapchim wrote, “I went into this expecing quirky from director Steven Soderbergh. It is not supposed to be a typical white collar crime drama. I loved the voice over with the main character just giving random thoughts, even in the most ridiculous context of what was happening to him at the time. It is not action packed, drama filled but it is a pleasant black comedy with Matt Damon given a realy understated performance. Not laugh out loud funny but certainly brings you into the period of the early 1990’s and tells the true story of a guy who was living in another world in his head. ” This reviewer gave The Informant! a 4 star rating.

The Time Traveler’s Wife

The Time Traveler’s Wife, directed by Robert Schwentke, featuring Eric Bana and Rachel McAdams, earns spot #5 on the list of top movie downloads. Want to know what others think? Let’s see the latest reviews!
On March 07, this reviewer said: “First of all, I will say that this movie is definitely something different. Obviously it’s supposed to be a love story of sorts, but it has such a different background with the time travel premise that it offers something a little different which makes for an interesting viewing experience. As many have pointed out, the time travel aspect is very implausible and not very well explained. You just have to sort of accept it as a premise for the film. The movie begins with great romantic enthusiasm which eventually goes through periods of great frustration and ends with feelings of reluctant acceptance. There were two things that made the movie less than five stars for me. First of all, I think the time travel aspect was quite underdeveloped both in the explanation of it and in the episodes themselves. They seem to happen quickly without much development of what happens during them. Second, I think a number of possibilities go undeveloped such as the potential of changing the future. This is the type of movie in which you expect the happy ending to involve everyone being together in the end through some twist, but it doesn’t quite work out that way. In any case, this movie is worth checking out because it’s so different. It has a similar feel to the movie The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. ” This person named their movie review review Something different and they gave The Time Traveler’s Wife a 4 star rating.

On March 08, this reviewer said: “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs is a great movie for kids of all ages. Kids will love the somewhat frantic pace and fast action, while adults will enjoy some of the jokes that go over the kids heads.
My boyfriend and I both fell off the couch laughing during the scene with the gummy bears on the wings of the plane. My kids didn’t understand what was so funny but they also loved that scene.” This person named their movie review review Great movie and they gave Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs a 5 star rating.

Moon

Moon, directed by Duncan Jones, featuring Sam Rockwell and Kevin Spacey, has achieved a rating of #7 and thus is one of the top 10 movie rentals. Is it a good movie? Well, here is a recent review:
In a movie review on March 09 entitled If You Believed They Put a Man on the Moon, psn-skymac2 wrote, “Last month I watched Pandorum about a couple of guys seemingly stranded in deep space that find themselves in a very confusing situation. And I suggested that Pandorum was reminiscent of the classic Twilight Zone series. While Moon’s story is completely different and unique, I would venture to say that I was again reminded of The Twilight Zone, and it is about a guy in space–on the Moon to be exact–that finds himself in a very confusing situation.
Moon is a one man show…well, that’s not exactly correct, but you’ll have to see the movie to see what I mean. Sam Bell played by Sam Rockwell has a three year mission on the moon to oversee a mega corporation’s mining operation that runs mostly on autopilot. While the autopilot of the mining operation keeps production flowing, and the base where Sam is housed has a mainframe with the AI of…well…of Kevin Spacey, Sam is needed to perform tasks that only a human could complete. But what if something unexpected happened to Sam?
When I first heard about this movie I wrote it off as one of those films that was sure to be a psychological drama about a guy that go nuts from an extended solitary mission in space. Okay, Moon may ultimately have a tad bit of that, but by far Moon is a movie with much much more. Rockwell’s acting is great. The movie never gets boring and is in fact quite suspenseful at times. Simply put: Moon is a great movie.
And where was Sam Rockwell’s nomination for Best Actor? I mean the guy completely carries Moon with a little voiceover help from Kevin Spacey.
If you believe there’s nothing up my sleeve, you’ve got to see Moon.

Inglourious Basterds

Inglourious Basterds, directed by Quentin Tarantino, featuring Brad Pitt and Melanie Laurent, holds spot #10 on our list of top online movie rentals today. Should it be in this spot? Some think so, others say no. Here is the latest review:
In a movie review on March 10 entitled If only I could give this movie no stars!, albiyanka wrote, “The use of scrupulously depicted gruesome scenes, completely superfluous in this film, (a well-documented preferred phenomenon of Tarantino), demonstrates a cruel mind and obviously the sinister soul of the director. The plot could have led to a decent picture, but Tarantino’s affinity for superfluous carnage and violence leads any decent screenplay into an abyss of semi-entertaining failed dreadfulness. I am unsure why a self-respecting actor would appear in Tarantino movies. Why we still watch Tarantino movies is beyond me. Fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, three times, shame on me!” This reviewer gave Inglourious Basterds a 1 star rating.
